Changing Currency Codes

New currencies are created and old currencies are discontinued.

These types of changes typically are the result of the formation of new countries, treaties between countries on shared currencies or monetary unions, or redenomination due to excessive inflation.

Below are a list of recently added, or changed currency codes:

• VES is the currency code for the Venezuelan Bolivar. VED (2021) - still in circulation, VEF (2018), VEB (2007) are previous currency codes used by Venezuela.

• SLE is the currency code for the Sierra Leonean Leone. SLL was the old currency code used before 2021 in Sierra Leone.

• is the currency code for the São Tomé and Príncipe Dobra. STD was the old currency code used before 2018 in São Tomé and Príncipe.

• MRU is the currency code for the Mauritanian Ouguiya. MRO was the old currency code used before 2017 in Mauritania.

• BYN is the currency code for the Belarusian ruble. BYB (2016), BYR (2000) are previous currency codes used by Belarus.

• ZMW is the currency code for the Zambian Kwacha. ZMK was the old currency code used before 2013 in Zambia.

• ZWG (aka ZiG) is the currency code for the Zimbabwe Gold. ZWD (2006), ZWN (2008), ZWR (2009) are previous currency codes used by Zimbabwe.

• TMT is the currency code for Turkmen Manat. TMM was the old currency code used before 2009 in Turkmenistan.

• TRY is the currency code for the Turkish Lira TRL was the old currency code used before 2006 in Türkiye.

• MZN is the currency code for the Mozambican Metical. MZM was the old currency code used before 2006 in Mozambique.

• AZN is the currency code for the Azerbaijani New Manat. AZM (2006), AYM (2005) are previous currency codes used by Azerbaijan.

• BRL is the currency code for the Brazilian Real. BRR (1994), BRN (1993), BRC (1989) are previous currency codes used by Brazil.

• ARS is the currency code for the Argentinian Peso. ARA (1992), ARP (1985), ARY (1983) are previous currency codes used by Argentina.

• PLN is the currency code for Polish Złoty. PLZ was the old currency code used before 1995 in Poland.
